Thesis
Below is a series of views from my Master of Fine Arts thesis exhibition, held at Tufts University Aidekman Gallery in February of 1997. I created a multimedia chamber incorporating sculptural, aural, visual and tactile elements. It was a representation of an alternate fantasy universe - a meditative, purified environment.
I constructed a 12' x 10' x 20' room in the corner of the gallery. The interior walls of the chamber were painted black, and the ceiling was covered with black fabric. Next, I covered the floor of the chamber with sand to a depth of three inches, into which I embedded five 2' diameter acrylic domes. Each dome housed a different fantasy-scape.
You will need the
latest version of quicktime to view the clips below.

Title: Incubator Dome
Materials: fiber optics, styrofoam, polyfoam, sand, glass, acrylic, glitter, paint, balsa wood, plywood
This dome represented a factory, generating the elemental components of life.

Title: Pink Salt Dome
Materials: sand, rocks, moss, acrylic, dolls, glitter, paint, plywood
Here, the two nude glitter-head dolls are playing a game of cards with elements. The dolls' cards comprise salt: Sodium(Na), and Chlorine(Cl).

Title: Silver Planetoid Dome
Materials: sheet metal, plaster, polyfoam, moss, acrylic, dolls, glitter, paint, plywood
The dolls in this world are playing with planetoids(newly formed planets). The floor of the dome served as a projection surface for a video loop of an archetypal earth-nature-goddess character birthing planetoids.
The audio loop is a recording of Mica Mica Parva Stella, (Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star in Latin), sung by the MIT Muses (an a capella women's choir).

Title: H20 Dome
Materials: polyfoam grass, moss, dried flowers, acrylic, water, pump, dolls, papier mache, paint, plywood
This is the only dome which had any actual life form in it. By the end of the three week exhibition, mold was growing on the flowered heads of the dolls.

Title: Blue Mountain Dome
Materials: papier mache, dolls, dried flowers, clay, moss, acrylic, glitter, paint, plywood
Here the dolls are growing in clay pots.
